Counter-Terrorism Force

Stretching the Truth

Besides the recent dastardly attacks on policemen and Rangers in Karachi, the TTP brutally beheaded 23 Frontier Corps (FC) men in their custody in Afghanistan. Why are we talking to these sadistic murderers when they are not going to stop their atrocities, and more importantly, does their negotiating committee really have the mandate to represent most of the terrorist factions? One does not question TTP’s capability for sporadic violence, particularly against the defenceless, one does question their ability to exercise influence, let alone control, over all the terrorist factions, specially when those with criminal intent far outnumber those with ideological ambitions. They could be telling the truth when they denied the repeated bomb attacks killing and injuring many moviegoers in a Peshawar Cinema.

Who is on Trial in Musharraf Case?

According to both legal opinion and mass public perception, prima facie the case against Gen Pervez Musharraf for treason is legally a “slam dunk”, he is guilty as charged. According to Article 6 the extra-constitutional measures Musharraf used on Nov 3, 2009 to remove the SC judges is “treason”. Will the trial court have the audacity to buck what the Supreme Court (SC), headed by the prime victim of Musharraf’s Nov 3 action, had already declared in 2009 as a “done thing”?

Countering the Terror Threat

Consider the theatrics of the absurd by some political clerics at the killing of the terrorist responsible for slaughtering thousands of innocent Pakistanis. Indeed pathetic that the fundamentally moderate Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) should label Tehrik-e-Taliban-i-Pakistan (TTP) Chief Hakimullah Mehsud a “Shaheed”! To safeguard their fiefdoms, politicians and clerics often turn to appeasement of militants. The Army did well by immediately reacting to what potentially can erode the morale of the rank and file. And so did PM Mian Nawaz Sharif, burying 15 years of self-created bad blood with the Army by a maiden visit to GHQ soon after the JI leader’s outrageous remarks, he rightly called the Army’s martyrs as “our benefactors”.
